Prohibition begins in Boston and the rest of the U.S.

The ban on the sale of alcohol begins one year to the day after ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment. In Boston, some 4,000 speakeasies open around the city, employing as many as 15,000 people. Prohibition ends in 1933.*
